About the City

Ostrava ranks among the most dynamically developing Czech cities, constantly offering new opportunities. As the third-largest city in Czechia, it lies close to the borders with Poland and Slovakia, making it a gateway to both Western and Eastern markets. It is home to around 285,000 residents, and the wider Ostrava metropolitan area hosts nearly one million people.

As a student city, Ostrava is home to the University of Ostrava and the VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. It is also an important hub for science, research, and innovation. Moreover, it regularly hosts top-tier cultural and sporting events of international importance, such as the Ice Hockey World Championship and the multi-genre international music festival Colours of Ostrava.

Ostrava is a prime example of successful economic and social transformation after the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution in 1989. Without turning its back on its industrial heritage, over the course of 30 productive years, it has evolved into a green and welcoming city, rich in architecture and vibrant with social, cultural, and sporting life. We believe it’s a place where promising investments can truly flourish.

Mgr. Jan Dohnal, Mayor of Ostrava

Ostrava at EXPO 2025

EXPO 2025 in Osaka presents a unique opportunity for Ostrava to showcase its ambitions, rapid development, and the wide range of opportunities it offers to residents, visitors, and investors alike. The exhibition's location in the strategically important Indo-Pacific region also opens the door to new international partnerships and raises awareness of Ostrava in this key part of the world.

Ostrava will be featured in the Czech National Pavilion as a modern European city with a unique industrial history and a lively cultural scene. The aim is to engage visitors from Japan and the broader Southeast Asian region, inspiring them to discover a city that can enrich their journey through Czechia – alongside destinations like Prague or Český Krumlov.

The city's presentation will also highlight investment opportunities in Ostrava. The city boasts a well-developed infrastructure, fully prepared industrial zones, a skilled workforce, and a prime location with access to railways and a nearby airport.

Those interested in cooperation or wanting to learn more about the city are warmly invited to meet Ostrava’s representatives in person on September 11–12, 2025, at the Czech National Pavilion.
