Pilsen Philharmonic

September 4-7, 2025

The Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra is a renowned musical ensemble with over a century of tradition. It collaborates with leading musicians and regularly performs in prestigious European concert halls, such as the Gasteig in Munich, the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main, the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, the Konzerthaus and Stadthalle in Vienna, the Tonhalle in Zurich or the Rudolfinum and O2 Arena in Prague. The orchestra also performs at major music festivals. These include the Prague Spring International Music Festival, Dvořák's Prague International Music Festival, Richard Strauss Tage in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or the Engadin Festival in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The Philharmonic is also the organizer of the multidisciplinary festival Smetana Days.

The Pilsen Philharmonic has also recorded several respected recordings. The collection of compositions for cello and orchestra by Bohuslav Martinů (cello Petr Nouzovský & conductor Tomáš Brauner) was critically acclaimed and won the Classic Prague Awards 2017 in the Recording of the Year category. The disc Japan-Czech Inspiration with compositions by Akira Ifukube and Leoš Janáček was also exceptionally well received in Europe and Japan. This CD was also nominated for the German Opus Klassik Award. The recording was made under the direction of Chuhei Iwasaki. This native of Tokyo has been the chief conductor of the Pilsen Philharmonic since September 2021.

The concert performance of the Pilsen Philharmonic will interestingly connect Czech and Japanese culture. The Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the works of great composers Akira Ifukube (1914–2006) and Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904), who achieved worldwide fame. Both drew heavily on the rich folklore of their respective nations; this applies both to Ifukube's Japanese Suite (1933), which is based on Japanese traditions, festivals, and rituals, and Dvořák's Czech Suite (1879), with dances and melodies evoking the domestic landscape. Especially for this occasion, the world premiere of the orchestral version of Dvořák's  String Quartet in F major, Op. 96, B179, called 'American' by the internationally acclaimed composer and arranger Tomáš Ille, is also being prepared. By including works by Antonín Dvořák, the Pilsen Philharmonic will also celebrate the 184th anniversary of the birth of this musical genius.
