Internationally acclaimed tenor Štefan Margita performed for the Japanese audience as part of the World EXPO 2025 in Osaka in three thematically distinct concerts, which took place at the Czech National Pavilion on July 8, 9, and 10, 2025. Cellist Iris Moris and pianist Karel Vrtiška joined him.
Three Concerts, Three Worlds – Chanson, Folk, Opera
The musical program was divided into three separate evenings, each offering a different musical dimension. The first evening was dedicated to chanson, the second featured a selection of Czech and Moravian folk songs, and the final evening belonged to operatic arias. Each concert had its own unique atmosphere, yet all were united by the warm energy between the performers and the enthusiastic reception from the Japanese audience.
“The audience was incredibly warm and attentive. I’m overjoyed by these evenings. Once again, music has shown its power to connect cultures and human hearts,” said Štefan Margita after the final concert.
Highlight of the Evening: A Song in Japanese
A significant moment of the entire concert series was Štefan Margita’s unexpected and deeply moving gesture—performing one of the songs in Japanese. Together with Iris Moris and Karel Vrtiška, he prepared this piece especially for EXPO and its Japanese audience. This powerful moment left a deep impression on the listeners and was rewarded with a long-lasting standing ovation.
Štefan Margita’s concerts were the highlight of the Autonomous Technologies Week at the World EXPO 2025, showcasing the power of Czech music as a tool of cultural diplomacy. The project was made possible thanks to the support of the Regional Chamber of Commerce of the Karlovy Vary Region, and the concerts were held exceptionally on weekdays. Typically, the cultural program at the Czech National Pavilion runs from Friday to Sunday. So far, it has welcomed over 30,000 visitors.
